@andrelebaron Khruschev wrote in his memoirs that he was impressed with JFK at their first meeting. The soviets put the missiles in Cuba because they thought they could conceal them as palm trees and would have them operational before they were detected. They had no idea how sophisticated the U2 spy plane was and were shocked at the clarity of the photos when the USA showed them at the UN.
