This DIY project is a practice for plans I have for my VAUDE Icepeak 150 down bag. I take out the bottom insulation, which is practically useless for most situations and I leave a pocket to slip in a closed cell foam pad. This frees up space in my bag and cuts off about 5 ounces, but could save you a lot more in a standard bag. This is a trick used by companies like Big Agnes in their sleeping bags.

The next step is to take the down off the bottom of my down bag and place it on the top to provide more warmth and then create a pocket for my sleeping pad. This would make it significantly warmer without adding any weight.
