A shrimp with attitude.

A prawn which can make a sound louder than a jet engine . A Pistol shrimps which stun their prey by snapping their claws together to create a deafening 'crack'. Spotted on Kapalai's housereef , an island close to Mabul and Sipadan, off Borneo's Eastcoast.

Despite being less than an inch long, the creatures can emit an astonishing 218 decibels - louder than a gunshot. The sound stuns small fish and crabs, allowing the shrimp to move in for the kill.

The sound is made by a jet of water created by the impact of the claws snapping together. This tiny stream spurts out at 60mph, creating a low pressure "bubble" in it's wake. When this collapses, it makes a sound louder then a rocketlaunch.
For a tiny fraction of a second, temperatures in the bubble soar to more than 4.426°C.
The popping also creates a flash of light that lasts for a billionth of a second.
When rivals meet they compete by seeing who can make the loudest noise and when the larger "snapping" claw is dameged, the smaller one grows to replace it.

They are among the loudest marine animals. The sound is comparable with that produced by a sperm whale.
There are around 600 species of pistol shrimp worldwide. Most dig burrows and feed off small crabs and fish.

It's more of a math thing. This sound is probably like someone hitting you on the side of the head while you're under water, escept more of a snap instead of a bopping sound. It's pretty loud.
