Keeling is a classic case of someone doing critical work that most people had no interest in. He was almost defunded by Ronald Reagan in the early 80s when the big Creationist anti-science push got started. Its legacy is still with us, unfortunately.
There's an article at AIP called "Money for Keeling: Monitoring CO2 Levels" which gives insight into the many forces trying to kill these monitoring programs. It's a good thing he was stubborn enough to fight for his work.

I only searched out this video because the Keelings are cousins of mine. I haven't actually met them so it is interesting to see what they look like. We live in different countries but one day maybe we will make it to the States! I do actually find the subject interesting too!
