When I was a kid one of my friends fell into the gearing under the bridge in Albion Ny, while it was up. The one at the end of Ingersol St. He was crushed to death. These suckers are dangerous watch out.

There are draw bridges so boats can go under the bridge and not hit it. Duh. Some boats are taller than the clearance. There is a draw bridge and a lift bridge. I grew up in Medina. Beautiful town. Peaceful.

i have never seen a draw bridge that goes up insteed of opeaning up, thats real intreasting

That staircase on the left are pedestrians to get out of waiting for nautical (or boat) traffic to clear.

Wow - I grew up a couple of miles form this bridge - WE used to play on it in the 70's - Nice to see it is still working!!!

Why are there drawbridges on the canal. Here in NJ, There are no drawbridges over Delware and Raritan canal.

@YankeePat94 the land is very flat where that bridge is, that's my best guess. most briges over the erie canal are high enough that extra room is unnecassary.
