I recorded all the different parts of the song seperate into the program logic pro 9. Everything was recorded using microphones (not plugged directly into the program. I used a Gibson AFD Les Paul and a Marshall AFD100. Also the wah pedal is a Slash signature wah. I used a 1960av cab with v30 speakers and a shure sm57 microphone. If I had used Classic Lead 80 speakers I think I'd have gotten an even closer sound! I am considering buying some! It sucks that it is shortened but it is a recording for AS level music tech and had to be between 3-4 minutes in length :/ I don't think I have done a bad job at all.

  • Good try, i do think the AFD is a hard amp to get just right in live and recording set up, but that'l be the fun for you to keep getting closer to the desired sounds over the years, Have you tried to mic up a clestion 80 and a v30 to see if you can blend them in? I think that the mic issues are the hurdles that you may be having that is either causing it to be slighty on the trebly side with thinner bass , I think a ribbon mic is warmer sounding than a sm57 ____ continued___>>>

  • @brickford27 - Thanks for the advise. I will stick to sm57 because I've read countlessly that it is the mic slash has sworn by with his recordings, however i shall try using two next time with one at the rear end of the room to capture a more full sound.

  • also i think recording to tape rather than computer programme would affect the sound making it more original . . . i did use a setting/effect for all the recordings though that is supposed to replicate the sound of an old tape recording.

  • The reverb comes from an effects pedalboard called springbox in the program logic pro 9. (the program that it was recorded into)

  • @brickford27 You should try a mic placed at rear of room for ambienced/ reverberations etc to give fullness to the sound , i think this was what the techs for slash did, they used various mics placed at different measures plus a mic to capture the ambience sound generated by the studio hall the cab was in, altogether making for a wide open full sound.

When i was in Music tech years back we learned alot about placements of mics and types and purpose etc i am sure you will learn the same soon

  • nice try but no cigar, sorry the lead is too grainy. doesnt sound like a afd100 or you have too much gain. listen to slashes recording. very smooth clean distortion.

  • Great work man. ;)

  • Sounds really good mate, ive just recently got my AFD100 and ive been using it with a single CL80s speaker it sound good but i think your V30s sound even better and would stick with them or try some G12m i hear they sound killer with the AFD.

  • Quality mate ;)

  • good job! The solo tone could be a tiny bit dirtier but well played. Keep enjoying your fine gear :) I finally got my AFD100 too.
