The kings river run is about 9 miles. The run normally takes 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. This was the peak of the year and the highest since 1997. It took 45 mins.
The water level was so much higher than normal that everything was washed out. All of the big waves and holes were buried and smoothed out. A couple thousand CFS lower and the river has really gnarly holes that eat you up and hold you. There are usually several keeper holes, but today every hole was pushing. The three of us tried to rally the troops, but we were alone in our charge. The raw footage can be found under the video "riverboarding kings river 17000 cfs."
Come next spring, I'm sure we will compile more and better footage of the rowdy holes at the lower levels.
Hey, I've rafted that run a bunch of times but have never boarded. What level of training do you recommend for someone with moderate rafting experience (I've never guided but have been on about two dozen trips on Class III and IV rivers) to give those boards a try? It really looks like fun.
