Možda ga mi Hrvati proglasimo svojim najvećim piscem svih vremena i podignemo mu velebni spomenik u Zagrebu...

IVO ANDRICS GREAT HUNCH

To completely understand „the Andric enigma", his novel „Omer-Pasha Latas" is crucial. The question is: Why didn't he finish his novel „Omer-Pasha Latas"? What did the great thinker, clairvoyant prophet, legendary writer and skilled diplomat foresaw, in connection with the ending of the novel, when he told Ljubo Jandric on June 12th, 1974 in Sarajevo: „Other bards will come and sing a song about what my soul feels, when the evening bell rings" ? (Source: "Sa Ivom Andricem", Author: Ljubo Jandric ; Publisher: Veselin Maslesa, Sarajevo 1982, page 412)

And in the end, is it only a novel? Of course not! Andric, by choosing Latas as the main character of the novel, its structure, content and purposely unfinished story sent a last message about the future of the people of Bosnia and Hercegovina. Particularly in the 90's of 20th century „it was the time of Latas" in that country. In some way, the unfinished novel as a paradigm of mentality, continues to live on in the present. Andric, by writing about Bosnia past actually wrote about our future.

And what about that future? Maybe us Croats should make him our greatest writer of all times and raise a monument in his honor in Zagreb...
