The kata Wankan is a little unique. First of all it is extremely short compared to most of the advanced Shotokan kata and secondly it has only one kiai, compared to the two kiai of every other Shotokan kata. Also it is rarely practiced nowadays in most Shotokan dojos but I think it is interesting nevertheless. It includes a good knee joint application against a front kick attack, as well as a light and quick but stealthy introduction to the kata in the first few movements.
Nice. I will have to try this version. The way I learned it is only a little different. Kiai at 20" with the last punch. After this at the turn right palm upward with a nukite kind of strike, and of course the same thing in the opposite direction. I like this palm strike version. And after the palm hand strike we stepped out in "mountain stance" (as in Yamagamae) at the end of the slow hand move.
After that the double punch straightens it out into front stance. As I said minor differences only.
