This time it's one of those things that most of us dreamed about doing but never had either skills or time to. It's "How to build your own custom Linux system?" Why is it so important to do so? It's not really, but if you could have an OS that had all the applications, games, codecs & such (that you use most often) "out of the box" without the need of spending time & installing them afterwards wouldn't you want to have a system like that? On top of that, think about all the software that clutters your hard drive & you never ever, even once turned on but it came preinstalled with your distribution? Wouldn't it be just great not to deal with it? Well, I don't know about you but it sounds awesome to me... So to answer that need (or my curiosity if you may) I've spend some quality 1-on-1 time with the internet & found few of the sollutions that can just achieve that. Anyway, to get to the heart of the thing, the software or more likely a web app I'm going to talk about here is SUSE Studio. Now, you may think that there's no proper Linux other than Ubuntu/Debian based distros but that is wrong. And untruth. Both. ^__^ I do run either Ubuntu or Mint on my main machine on a daily basis & I've converted both of my parents to use Ubuntu rather than Windows too, however I do not think of it as definite OS. I consider it more as of the OS that answers more of my needs than any others do. That said it could change if I could customize a distribution to fully have what I'm looking for out of the installation CD. Anyway, in this video I'll cover SUSE Studio online custom distribution creation & test drive it in a browser (yeah, you can do it online, even before you download it). And hopefuly if time let's me I'll introduce you to some more powerful & advanced sollutions. Though it's not going to be easy as I've had to cut out like 2/3 of the material for this video to fit it under 10 minute mark (well, 11, but that's just splitting the hair).
One way or another, enjoy & if you like it, please subscribe! ^__^

Useful links:

1. SUSE Studio
http://susestudio.com

Today's video's main subject. Easy & modular custom Linux distribution creation.

2. Slax Build
http://www.slax.org/build.php

Project similiar to SUSE Studio. It's also a modular one, though not as polished, simple to use or reliable. There's many dependencies issues and most of the modules are not tested thoroughly by developers, so it's less interesting choice to cover. Basically at the moment it looks like everything's all over the place at that website tough I've heard some positive stories about systems made with it.

3. Reconstructor
https://build.reconstructor.org/

Now, this is something that I hope to cover in the near future, however I may require to split the tutorial for this one into two or three parts as it's so in-depth and thorough. It's modular like the to previous ones though it's Debian/Ubuntu based and you can customize everything about it, to the very last small package. That said, this one's really built from the scratch as you're starting with an empty space and build upon. Requires at least advanced Linux knowledge to assemble it in a way that it would run flawlessly, but if you do It'll be much better than anything else you've seen before. So, I will do my best & try to get to grips with it & somehow make a tutorial on it's usage.

This video's sountrack is provided by the sound of an old but eternally alive computer - Amiga. For full track, authors & copyright list check the credits at the end of the video. ^__^

  • cool, but your not creating an own distro, just a costom opensuse. It is a way more complex to create a real distro. A good way to start is google: woof the puppy builder

it is the same thing but a bit harder , if you succes then start learning c or assembly and after some years , start programming you 'real' own linux distro. :D hope it helped!

  • @Xedify

ha ha! :) thanks but this was made sort of as a video to show of one of many possibilities of customizing Linux, and this was just one of the easiest ways of doing so with minimum base knowledge required :)

  • Liked the video...but I don't want suze and don't want to waste my money on recontructor. I also don't want the slax os.

  • @ProcuratorIncendia

AFAIK you can use Reconstructor to create one free distro per month... I'm not sure about that but so far I haven't paid anything yet and have made at least one already.

  • Um..i got a linux problem...i´m using it in virtual pc 2007 but i cannot go online with ANY linux distro (made with suse studio/ubuntu/Debian...) but it works in windows...does anyone know how to fix this problem?Network settings in virtual PC are NAT and im using wlan on the "real" pc and i can go with ANY windows online i virtual pc(sorry,my english is may bad...)

  • @SomeNoob13

I could sort of help... But I'm not sure you're gonna like it. ^_^

Get rid of Virtual PC and install VirtualBox (it's free and also Windows compatible), and as far as I know you should not have any issues with connection from under Windows.
