This video offers annotations for Tchaikovsky's symphonic fantasy, 'Francesca da Rimini'. The composition itself is based on the fifth canto from Dante's 'Inferno'.

The [grey] annotations are Tchaikovsky's own programme notes which appear at the start of the manuscript score. The [light brown] annotations provide a suggested interpretation of the music, using Tchaikovsky's programme as a starting point then looking to Dante's poetry for further insight. The [dark brown] annotations are quotations from the poem.

  • May I ask what rendition of the divine comedy you are sighting? I find it easier to read then some of the others and I am interested in reading the wonderful literature. :)

  • @lilmsem2013 It's the translation by John Ciardi. :)

  • This is the most emotional, the most romantic of all Tchaikovsky's works. I always wondered why "Chaikovsky" has "T" in front of the name. Makes no sense.

  • @Karen41872 Seeing as it's a transliteration from a different alphabet, it's just to do with linguistic fashion! It wasn't that long ago that everyone referred to a certain other Russian composer as 'Rachmaninoff'. Now it seems that every new recording spells it 'Rachmaninov'. There's no logic really!

  • The spelling problem is because of that damned good-for-nothing Cyrillic alphabet.

  • Thank you so much for this posting *^o^*

  • SAD TO THE SADDEST DEGREE. oooooo

  • Tschaikowski (german transliteration ;) ) composed the most beautiful melodies, in my opinion...

  • @Karen41872 Maybe because he is Russian?
