Berlioz(1803-1869)
"Resurrexit"Messe Solennelle

Donna Brown(soprano) Jean-Luc Viala(tenor) Gilles Cachemaille(bass-baritone)
Monteverdi Choir

Orchestre revolutionaire et romantique
Conducted by John Eliot Gardiner

world video premiere from Westminster Cathedral,October 1993

This is my favorite piece of Berlioz"s Messe Solennelle. After trying several times I upload the first music video from DVD in the end.But I don"t know why I spent 4 hours nearly to upload the MPG format.Perhaps it has broke another world record in this work.

  • @Hegemoner I wouldn't say that it's lacking in musicality, but it's not his best work (certainly not structurally) and that's probably why he destroyed it (or attempted to).

  • Right--When the Messe was initially released, I was fortunate enough to obtain a LaserDisk version which I still can play. It's magnificent. That's an obsolete format now, of course, but I believe a small number of used VHS tapes are still available at resellers on Amazon. To me, it's worth it to have the video!

  • @CarlosFinch John Eliot Gardiner recorded the full Messe Solennelle from which this is a part.

  • @zehnterapril : 6 1/2 month, concentrating on this mass exclusively - it was really very difficult, especially for us Altos, who have to sing either a second Soprano or a Tenor-track, which means alternating in register from one piece to the next....; but we had 4 concerts in the first year (2 in Germany and 2 in Italy) and then performed it again 3 times 4 years later, as we loved it so much!

  • @MinervasEule

How long did it take your choir to learn this?

    I love Hector Berlioz.

  • To sing this mass has been the greatest experience in 34 years of choir-singing - we all got totally blown away!!

  • Don't quite know what to say as I have been immersed in Mozart lately. Bold and showy but somehow lacking integration and musicality?

  • ah! the Tuba Mirum from Grande Messe des Morts!

  • @CarlosFinch

Found a bunch. Only available recording now out ofprint.

  • Is there a recording of this piece? Can't seem to find one at the usual suspects.
