Project SALVO
1. In 1948, the Army organized the civilian Operations Research Office. Operations Research Office. Over 3 million battlefield reports from World War I and World War II were analyzed and over the next few years they released a series of reports on their findings. The conclusion was that most combat takes place at short range. In a highly mobile war, combat teams ran into each other largely by surprise; and the team with the higher firepower tended to win.

The point is to begin with a massive burst of fire, then gradually slow down. The first few seconds put the enemies faces into the dirt, the slower fire keeps them there. It is a shock tactic used by the US Military all the time, hell just watch some ambush videos.

yeah somewhere i read that even in ww2 that whenever they came in contact with the enemy that they were supposed to completely unload there first magazine towards the direction of the enemy, im guessing they were talking about the ppsh sub machine gun.

Although the quick rate of fire is awesome, Waaaay too quick for suppression fire. Unless you've got a buddy to cover you, it'd be way obvious when you run out of bullets.

@shodan1028 I should've stated that it's great for intial suppression / taking the initiative when frist contact is made.
You are right, though. If I wanted to suppress for a longer time frame, the fire rate would be lower (unless I had a crew served - then the crew served would do the suppression).
