First of three meetings during 1985-1987, when Oklahoma was famously 33-0 against teams other than Miami. This game, a 27-14 Miami victory, was at Norman on October 19, 1985, with the unbeaten Sooners a 5 point favorite. A young Canes team had lost the opener home vs. Florida. This game opened with Vinny Testaverde vs. Troy Aikman as opposing QBs. But Aikman's career altered dramatically when Jerome Brown broke his ankle in the second quarter. I'll post the highlights of the final three quarters when I get a chance. Aikman looked surprisingly good running a hybrid wishbone with blended passing. Freshman Jamelle Holieway struggled after replacing Aikman, as Oklahoma reverted to its more traditional wishbone. Switzer always said Oklahoma may have won the game with a healthy Aikman, but would not have gone on to win the 1985 national championship, which the Sooners managed with Holieway, defeating Penn State in the Orange Bowl. Aikman transferred to UCLA following the season, once Holieway was established as the QB, and it was obvious Aikman would be a better served in a pass oriented attack. Miami blew a split title by getting clobbered by Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl as a 7 point favorite.

  • This was back when Miami played every bowl game in the orange bowl at the end of the year. home field advantage always.

  • @LostBoyyy

Miami played in the Sugar Bowl after the 1985 season, losing to Tennessee. The SEC team had a virtual monopoly the tickets and fan support in the Sugar Bowl.

But there's no question Miami benefited from playing in the Orange Bowl, bowls and otherwise. I wish it were still the case. We make up for our previous advantage by currently occupying the most bland glorified neutral site imaginable.

  • the good old days when the screen was free of all those annoying graphics. god, i hate espn.

  • Great rivalry in the mid 1980s

  • @craigclass yeah, that is true..i just dont think it was fair back then but guess its all about money.

  • @LostBoyyy its funny when usc was playing the rose bowl every year but when the canes played the orange bowl everybody bitched

  • @Riverdrinker how true....some cowboys fans will point out that shitzer won a superbowl with the cowboys. i say: not so fast, he won with jimmy's players and the cowboys never got back to the big game after that. as for broyles, he *thought* he knew what was best for the razorbacks. the turd didn't tell jimmy that hatfield was already hired as coach. imagine how he felt after jimmy's hurricanes kicked the crap of of the razorbacks in '87 - (51-7).

  • @ztztzyzy I hear you. Broyles on this audio with Keith Jackson is the Jackoff that refused Jimmy Johnson an opportunity to coach the Razorbacks and Johnson highly resented it and ended up in Miami taking them to a national championship. You know Switzer played for Broyles. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

  • can you count how manny future cowboys are in this game

  • @paulsonj72 Switzer is the jackoff responsible for Marcus DuPree's downfall, he berated him often and treated him like shite. DuPree could've been one the greatest college backs of all time. I don't remember the name of the special thay did on espn about DuPree. Why would anyone treat a superback that way? i'll let you speculate. As for Aikman, when he found out Shitzer was his new cowboys coach, there was still residual static as I remember espn covering that. they kiss and make up so to speak

  • @ztztzyzy

Switzer also said they would throw about 15 passes a game and looking at the stats comming into this game in 1985 Oklahoma had thrown the ball 40 times in 3 games(which was a lot for a Switzer coached wishbone team). Switzer also helped Aikman in his transfer to UCLA and actually said that when his(Aikman's) draft class came he had coached the best pure QB in that class he was laughed at by people saying to Switzer"What do you know about a QB"

  • Thanks for posting! Loved it!
