The name "Rothenburg ob der Tauber" is actually a shortened version of "Rothenburg oberhalb der Tauber", which in German means "Rothenburg over the Tauber". This is so because the town is located on top of a mount overlooking the Tauber river. As to the name "Rothenburg", some say it comes from the German words Rot (Red) and Burg (burg, medieval fortified town), referring to the red colour of the roofs of the houses which overlook the river.

  • Ja Rothenburg ist schon etwas besonderes! Schade, dass im Krieg so viele deutsche Städte zerstört wurden. Allein Frankfurt hat ja mehrere 1000 Fachwerkhäuser verloren...umso mehr sollte man solche Städte schützen...Thx for this beautiful video ;o)

  • Rothenburg ob der Tauber is my 2nd home. I studied at the Goethe Institut there for 4 months. This city and the locals there are very near and dear to my heart and I hope to get back there one day! Thanks for your video, it really brought back some great memories for me :)

  • Beautiful!!! simply beautiful!!!

Although I wasn't planning to visit Rothenburg when I visit Germany next Spring, but I will have to visit now after seeing this!!!

    Thank you! :-D

  • Thank you for the video. My wife and I traveled there in 2000 and are planning a trip next year with our twins, who will be 6 next year. I want them to visit Kathe Wohlfahrts Christmas Store and can't wait to see the looks on their faces. We stayed at the Burghotel and had a great view of the river and valley. The Night Watchman's Tour is a must and so is the Torture Museum.

  • I was there in 1971, and wish I could go back some day. Germany was so beautiful with the old historical scenes and buildings. I never took enough pictures.

  • Oh hey my hometown! I`m living there x3 Well, I like it because of the atmosphere, but for tourists it`s sure more exciting than for me.

  • The Hotel Markusturm appears in the video at 6:35. We stayed there in 1979. Beautiful town and great hotel. Wish I could get back there.

  • a random question, but how many haunted houses are there in Rothenburg?
