You seem to forget that strikes have two sides, employers as well as employees and their organisations. Where the employer is also the government, this means they are inevitably political. Perhaps you think trade unions should simply accept whatever terms employers hand down to them including, in this case, pit closures & massive job losses. If you bother to look up the Ridley Plan, written in 1978, you'll realise that the Tories were planning the strike with the NUM well before it took place.
