Poverty groups plan to challenge new law
VICTORIA: As of now it is illegal to camp on boulevards in the City of Victoria.
A new bylaw inspired by the tents and tarps along the 900 block of Pandora Avenue was passed by council Thursday afternoon.
Police and politicians say it is a safety issue.
But anti-poverty groups say it's an excuse to target the poor.
Every morning police move some of the city's homeless off the boulevard along Pandora Avenue.
It has been an ongoing ritual for Victoria Police for months.
Businesses say the unsightly mess left by the campers is hurting their bottom line. Police are concerned about safety after several pedestrians were hit by cars.
Though activists plan to challenge the new law - it could be some time before Victoria Police enforces the legislation.
The department says it will begin educating campers before taking any action.
