Annette Hanshaw (October 18, 1901 - March 13, 1985) was one of the first great female jazz singers. In the late 1920s she ranked alongside Ethel Waters, Bessie Smith and the Boswell Sisters.

Her singing style was relaxed and suited the new jazz-influenced pop music of the late 1920s. Although she had a low opinion of her own singing, she continues to have fans because of how she combined the voice of an ingenue with the spirit of a flapper.

  • God, I love this song around about 1:40--she's doing the horn part! For the same reasons, I like The Boswells--so innovative in many ways in the same song.

  • Annette Hanshaw made all her recordings from around 1926-33 when the 'sound' was unique. From 1934 on it wasn't quite the same, so this is why, apart from her voice, all her recordings are impeccible.

  • She just doesn't have any bad songs. This is great. She had a style that no one had and recording was still in its infancy when she made these recordings. The band is steady behind her. Doesn't matter what your race -- there's a lot to learn from Annette Hanshaw if you're an aspiring jazz vocalist.

  • I love this! The last note she echoes the down home blues of Jimmie Rodgers. This is fun music.

  • Great -I've got a version of this on a 78 somewhere -no means of playing though.
