There was no government conspiracy. What happened was that Lake Nyos is a crater lake, and the magma chamber underneath it seeps carbon dioxide into the water at the bottom until it became saturated. Some kind of disturbance (possibly a rockslide) caused the pressure to release and the lake to explode like a shaken can of soda, releasing a deadly cloud of the gas into the air. Because carbon dioxide is denser than air, it sinks to the ground and smothers every living thing in its path.

The amazing thing is this 'thing' didn't dissapate(sp) as it spread out and traveled along....scary stuff....just goes to show, we are not promised our next breath....each moment is a blessing...wow...to see people cut down in mid stride, just going about their lives. wow.....I feel bad for those people..

People die from just one quick minute of "huffing"...or a few minutes of being surrounded by harmful inhalants in a poorly ventilated room. Though only a handful...they survived an ENTIRE night in that!! Amazing they didn't have brain damage x_x. Doesn't it basically turn ya brain to mush I thought......crazy.

I NEVER heard/read about this until today. I Googled all natural disasters of 2010...cuz I saw something on the news, but my TV was muted and I couldn't find my remote lol....&then I found a list of the Top 10 most weird and worst natural disasters. This is crazy but truly amazing people could survive

@Buju561 Nearby springs are blamed for leaking C02 from underneath the earth into the water, which accumulates and eventually becomes such a large concentration that when it mixes with the air, it becomes deadly and can force people into a coma, where they die (immobile) because their skin forms "air bubbles" when their skin can't breathe.
