Nowadays, four out of five Europeans live in cities and they have a right to live in healthy urban areas. Cities should therefore strive to improve the quality of life of their citizens and reduce their impact on the global environment. The European Green Capital Award encourages them to do so and encourages other cities to follow suit.

  • Great idea!

Athens needs such initiatives. I am fed up with all these gases here. Hardly can we breathe...

  • no, it's not

  • BW, at least he didn't abolish it. I'm sure his associates in the UK and friends abroad will be working to discredit and abolish the scheme. The right (internationally) hates a good example of that kind as it stops them from saying "it'll never work" and being, well, conservative about new ideas.

Anyway, what I originally intended to comment about was that there's no list of applicant cities, or to cities' websites about their application. Any chance of adding this?

  • Please please, i BEG you EU tube journalists. Start the discussion about the "European Capital of Culture" "contest". It is useless. We cant make culture a product! It is not european, dont take all america as good for EU. We have only coruption scandals. Liverpool had, now Vilnius (where i live). People show the value of the city, not PR companies. I support the green city idea, no business can change that, only the citizens of the city can make it greaner.

    NO to "CULTURAL TRADING"!

  • My city is Santiago de Compostela (Galicia, Spain). I just can say that' it is, indeed, a highly green city :)

  • Great idea!! That's gonna be great promotion for the cities and its people. Go Europe! :)

  • Sounds like a great idea indeed. But let's start with eliminate the continuous trafficking of the European Parliament between Brussels and Strasbourg. Think of sheer waste of energy caused by the dozens of truckloads of paperwork to be transported, two sets of offices to maintain, temporary housing for the MPs, staff and journalists, and extra time.

And all that because of France.

  • I will send my city council the link and encourage them to participate. Competition only works if you know that you are in it.

I hope more cities will come up with a London-like congestion charge ... too bad that Boris won and announced that he will keep it at the current rate. Ken would have raised it to 25Pounds for each entry!!! That would have made a difference.

  • sounds like a great idea initiative...
