Been lap-knapping for about 3 years and have a couple of boxes of nice points that aren't notched..for fear i'll screw them up! I've tried many ways and have seldom been lucky to notch much without breaking the shoulders off !!! But Your video changed my WHOLE knapping world ...The straight on method you showed did the trick ,(I tended to "tilt the notcher and that spelled trouble everytimeTHANKS FOR HELP ....Its a lifesaver not to mention I have fewer square ended points. THANKS 500sureshot

I'm just begining, and I'm having trouble finding good starting videos about the right rocks and how to find them, and how to hit the rocks to make good flakes.

Can you turn it if you need too like wintu points?
-
I assume that this is really only effective on really thin pieces? Yes, no?

i have seen this done by another knapper and it worked great for him. i have got to try this. thanks for sharing

this is harder than it looks. i tried it and just ended up with a horse shoe nail half way in my thumb

Good job ,many thanks ,Salvando.
Yes, it's pretty easy to change directions. Try it on a few flakes of high grade rock.

Hi EDBO23 -- Nice Technique, it looks like you do away with the problem where the ishi width causes the ear to break as you go deeper into the piece? I have seen other demo's where you have to start much wider to allow for the ishi width!
I can see myself losing the point in my thumb though. Have you done that yet?
Many thanks -- Andrew (England)

@andrewnable I slip sometimes, but I modify my technique if the piece is too thick.
Thanks for watching!
