its surprising the amount of people that run their car, cook on a gas stove, and never give a second thought of how that is possible, i have worked in the north sea for 20 years, and the ghost of piper still lives on, its still remembered by rig workers, and standby crews. lets not forget, 2 frc crewmembers died too, while trying to rescue survivors. all we can do is hope that nothing like this ever happens again. 167 men lost their life. we will always remember them.
my father was killed on Piper -please do not use his and his co workers deaths to score points. That is wrong and btw he would dislike your music sir as my dad really played R&B as in Mississippi John Hurt
@Thimblerig. it doesn't matter if you think what is say is " not nice" it is true and a fact. the Oxy fire crew fled the scene of an active fire on the first Chinook. The Bawden drill team put out the fire with a deck cannon. Oxy personnel walked around Piper with a "better than you" attitude to contractors, most ticking boxes on a clipboard. when the shit hits the fan people become equals pretty quick.. lots of good men died that is stating the obvious. but what i said is true and fact.
The deluge valves did open and all worked, after the initial explosion that blew the control systems the "black start" diesel engines did not run up because they were on manual control due to divers being in the water. The two guys who went to try and start the fire pumps were both killed in the attempt. They were Occidental "jobsworths".
I was with Bawden on the Piper for 2 years and I remember we usually ended up at the sharp end. Oxy just wandered around tweaking valves and looking at gauges, we handled all the rough stuff.
The Occidental boys were jobsworths, i remember a previous fire that called for an evacuation by helicopter the Oxy fire crew were first out leaving the Bawden drill crew to put out fire with water cannons!! ask around it is true.
