This sarabande is no. 36 of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco's op. 170. Op. 170, known as the "Greeting Cards" series, is a set of 51 pieces that Tedesco wrote for his musician friends. Not all the pieces in the series are for guitar. In these pieces Tedesco was experimenting with serialism. No. 36 is dedicated to the Cuban guitarist Rey de la Torre and consists of a series of notes given for each letter of his name: F-D-B-C#-D-A-A-G-D-F-F-D, etc.
Some of the pieces in op. 170 are more strictly serial than others. No. 36 here is quite melodic and tonal and therefore could be considered semi-serial.
