Shampoo is a fantastic, intelligent, greatly entertaining and wickedly funny political comedy. Inspired by "The Country Wife", written by the noted playwright William Wycherley (1674), screenwriter Robert Towne wrote the first draft for "Shampoo". Later, lead actor (and producer) Warren Beatty wrote the political scenes, such as the fundraiser.
Beatty, as the male equivalent of the dumb blonde George Roundy, surrounded himself again with a stellar cast. Jack Warden as Lester Karp, Goldie Hawn as Jill, Julie Christie as Jackie Shawn, Tony Bill as Johnny Pope and introducing Carrie Fisher as Lorna. Lee Grant won the Oscar for best supporting actress for her portrayal as Felicia Karp. The movie is a great social and political commentary that, though filmed in 1974 and released the next year, takes place in the days before the 1968 elections. A true classic that intelligently mixes politics and humor.

  • Funny that grant is supposed to play an older woman in this film. She looks younger than Beatty.

  • Lee Grant by then already had had several plastic surgery procedures and has continued to do so. In recent pictures of her, the condition of her skin and cheek implants is almost painful to watch.
