A part of horse enyclopedia by Alexander Nevzorov, explaining the history of the bit.
Subs: De Nestier is undoubtedly a genius. There exists a universal illusion that a horse in sport, in a cart, in the cavalry, is controlled by man, but it is not so. The horse is controlled by pain. The horse is stopped by pain, is turned by pain and, generally speaking, guided by pain. As a matter of fact, the whole history of horse-riding is the history of pain of the horse. It's just that but it's not customary to speak about it. And it all began in a very simple and very scary way. It began with a small ring. Many thousands years ago, in his desire to rule over the horse, a man used a ring, with which he pierced its nostrils, something like this, you see. Thus it breaks the horse's nasal septum. Than two ropes were tied to the ring, and through the use of them it was possible to control a horse. This method was cruel and crude because the nasal septum around the ring got badly injured and tore quickly and very soon the ring became absolutely ineffective. And then the man started to look for a more vulnerable and sensitive place in the horse's body in order to control it. And he found this place. That place turned out to be the mouth. And that was when the horse bit was invented -- the term that is universal for all languages, horse bit.

@confetti1977 Yeah...you are a professional showjumper and thus you know "everything" about horses. I can tell you this: you know practically nothing about them and you don't care to know about increasing their welfare either. People like you are the problem of this world: too many people do not want to invest time to change, time to learn. Alexander Nevzorov studies the horse like everyone should. He spent a major amount of time studying physiology and behaviour and therefor understands horses.

@horsesandjesus "Cult" means that every person is being held within. But in NHE if you don't follow the rules and some common sense you get KICKED OUT. Real cultists never kick people out but try to get everybody in no matter who the person is.

I do not know. saying that horses are not ment to be riden its a BIT haha to much for me.
here in chile we use leather bits, and no bits at all to start colts and phillies.
and horses have open there mouths for me to put bits in them when I was little. so, I think I'll stick to Hempfling. Like His way better

Wtf is this? Some commercial for bitless riding?(PeTA or Parille (sp?) is probably behind this. (No offense. Nothing wrong with riding bitless, those two groups often seem to think they are better and everyone should follow their reason (no matter how crazy)))
A bit does not cause pain if they are in GENTLE hands. Any bit in ROUGH hands will be painful.
A gentle pull is just a bit of pressure.
A quick jab or sharp pull is pain.
It's common sense.

Horses can't breath with the mouth.
If ever smth is put in the mouth and makes horse "switch" to chewing/digestive function the breathing system becomes passive.
Then-> the horse in movement NEEDS a HUGE amount of oxygen to function properly, BUT the bit(sometimes several of them and quite hard ones, it's not a secret.) interfere -> obstruction of airways, the windpipe, membranes...... ->Serious discomfort, pain, diseases obstructions....

"Just like us"....? So when you are explaining smth to somebody - he doesn understand you flap him, he doesn't understand once again you put your hand in the air AND he IMMEDIATELY says that everything is clear. That is what is the fear of pain. So it's REALLY like this that things should work:)))? Don't think so;).....
