I visited City Hall today to view the three Transit Center models on display (see video). I found them to be incredibly interesting as well as alluring. They really gave me a sense of how huge this project is going to be. The redevelopment plan for the neighborhood includes 3,400 new homes of which 35% will be affordable, 1.2 million square feet of office space, hotel space, commercial space and 60,000 square feet of retail.
The transit hub (about a million square feet) will eventually include AC Transit, BART, Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit, Greyhound, MUNI, SamTrans and the future high speed rail between SF and LA. Construction on the Transit Center is scheduled to begin in 2010 and be completed in 2014.
Beginning in 2012 work will begin to extend Caltrain, which currently begins/ends at 4th and King to the new transit hub via a tunnel under 2nd Street. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2018.
