Lyndon Johnson signed the bill into law.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 The bill was introduced by President John F. Kennedy (liberal). Howard W. Smith, a Conservative Democrat and avid segregationist from Virginia, indicated his intention to keep the bill bottled up indefinitely. The bill came before the full Senate for debate and conservative southern Senators launched a filibuster to prevent passage.

Perhaps "liberal" was a bit of a stretch, however Hitler not only called himself a socialist but he WAS a socialist by the standard of the times. Ideas that are now condemned as Rightist were in Hitler's day perfectly normal ideas among Leftists. Socialism is "leftist", Progressivism is "leftist" and Liberals are "leftist" Mao, Hitler, Stalin, Lenin, Engles, Chavez, Castro, Che. All are reviled by the right but embraced by the left and our "president" barack obama.
