The 1st trumpeter is playing the piccolo trumpet in G, indeed, I think his tone blends well with other parts.

I just want to respond to my kindred spirit TheVacuumtube. I am not as kind as you, I want them to hear the whole piece! Seriously, the final six minutes is the finest ending of a symphonic piece - in my opinion - in the classical music repertoire: it never fails to move me, whoever conducts it and whichever orchestra; although this is a fine version. @Classicalstephen Funny how people share exactly the same feeling towards particular music... yes, I too want this piece to be played at my funeral... of course, only the final part, haha, otherwise all my guests attending my funeral will be gone run out of patience ( the piece is one and a half hour long ). hahaha, obviously conductor is very involved... can't blame him, this piece of music is so great. Mahler Third, final movement langsam... how deeply touching.

You're absolutely correct- I had never noticed. It's sounds wonderful, though Mahler wrote it for an F trumpet.How ironic that someone ( presumably Bychkov) is ' improving' Mahler's orchestration- something Mahler himself did to other composers, like Schumann. This is a terrific performance- it has weight, humanity and breadth. It's my first- equal favourite Mahler symphony with # 8.

@paulybarr ...I wasn't talking about that part. I was talking about figure 26 in the TRUMPET part. The guy in the performance is using a piccolo trumpet.

@NMC2188 The piccolo taking over the last bar of the flute solo is exactly what Mahler wrote- it's always played by the piccolo. ( 4 bars after figure 25 in the score).
