@tgbuckley482 That's exactly what I mean...During rehearsals - fair enough, but the actual performance, tom and jerry just comes to mind with a man just waving his arms around and pulling dramatic faces...surely his role becomes obsolete in the actual performance considering they have rehearsed and know what they are doing...thanks for the reply

@kochos777 well if what you're trying to say is 'can an orchestra work without a conductor' i'm sure it would be able to! but the orchestra needs to have rehearsed before they could know a work to the degree that would allow them to perform, and a conductor is crucial in rehearsal - instead of say the concert master having to get up every time the orchestra stops :P as for perfoming, the conductor in this performance isn't a great example of the need for conductors, he just waves his hands!

forgive me for sounding ignorant, but i've always wondered does an orchestra really need a conductor? Surely the musicians know when to play, how to play and what to play? it's all there in their sheet music and also they must practice to extreme amounts...you can see them not even looking at the conductor so is he actually necessary?

I didn't know this Tchaikovsky piece. It's really brilliant and the video and sound quality are excellent. Thanks for posting this.
If you listen to carefully at 6:53, the oboe is playing a theme that Vladimir Kosma probably ripped off to compose "Autumn Leaves" (Les feuilles mortes). This same theme comes back with strings behind at 11:29. Not doubt that Kosma had a solid knowledge about Russian classical and romantic music; then he could pick up themes here and there...

@7:54 way to cough during the most beautiful moment of the entire piece...
asshole.

@rsimcox Are you familiar with "The Tempest" ovt. Brilliant Tchaikovsky and rarely played. Go to you tube -Eliahu Inbal/Frankfurt Raio Orchestra for a marvellous performance.

@geenturner anything written by Tchaikovsky is wonderful. He is the true jenious way ahaid of his age.however my favourite is R&J .
Wonderful interpretation of a haunting work. I have never understood why "Romeo and Juliet" was so well known and this relatively obscure for so many years.
