Welcome to the Pulse Four-Point-Six: May is Lupus Awareness Month, and in this episode, we'll talk about the disease, hear from patients and learn more about the latest in medical breakthroughs.

In this video from Real Questions-dot TV, you'll hear from Dr. Mary Wasko, a clinical rheumatologist at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She talks about womens' risks for developing the disease, and explains how it attacks your immune system.

Lupus is a disease of the immune system that causes the body to produce antibodies and proteins that attack healthy tissue. It is common among women, but children can be affected as well.

Pediatrician, Dr. Thomas Joseph talks about the rarity of systemic lupus among children. He says it is a tough diagnosis to make, but talks about some of the warning signs.

As difficult as Lupus is to diagnose, its even more challenging to treat. In March, the FDA approved the first new drug to treat Lupus in 56 years. The drug- Benlysta, is delivered directly into a vein, and is thought to reduce the number of abnormal B cells -- thought to be a problem in Lupus.
Icyou user and Lupus survivor, Chandra Hightower shares her reaction to the new drug in this video. You can follow Chandra on the Sle-Mavin Channel, brought to you by the LEEP for Lupus Awareness Campaign to learn more about the disease first-hand.

As always, you can join the conversation by uploading your own videos to icyou anytime, free of charge. Our community would love to hear your stories and benefit from your expertise.
