  • I also resurface both valves, the lawn mower puffs out on the carb side and the exhaust ,,,it has a brand new head gasket,,,what parts do I have to remove to check the cam timing,,don't know where to start,,,thanks for the help...

  • @MrBeny179 Are the seats on the valves sealed correctly? I assume they are sense you resurfaced them. If it's puffing on the carb side, check the gasket that is between the carb and the head. It could be bad. Does your mower seem to run really lean?

  • @MrBeny179 Oh and no problem that's why I am here. If you think the cam timing is off then it is a bit of a process to get down to it. I am trying to see if it is anything else before we take that step. Are you able to make a video, that would help a huge amount! In fact I could probably diagnose it right there.

  • I replaced a blown gasket on my lawnmower but I still get this PUFFF sound when I try to start it,,,any Idea why ,,,,

  • @MrBeny179 Coming from where the gasket is? Did you torque the bolts to the correct setting? Was there severe warping of your head or the mating surface? It could be a lot of things. But I bet it may be the gasket area feel for air leaks and let me know what happens. If you have a compression tester that would be a better indicator.

  • if I advance the timeing will my motor run

  • @cfazekas0441 I wouldn't set the timing anywhere off from spec. The timing on a briggs is set by the manufacturer, and at the timing indicator that is when the engine will optimally run. Now the engine may already be advanced by the manufacturer and the timing indicator is the set point that the manufacturer designed it to fire. You shouldn't have to worry about advancing the timing because the engine is designed to run at peak at the timing indicators. If you did it might run crappy at best

  • Theres more to it then just lining up the dots on the cam if you reseat the valves you will need to check valve lash. Is the gap between the lifter and the valve the clearance should be about .003 on both IN take and EX. As for puffs out on the carb sometimes if every thing in time check the flywheel keyway to see if its brok if it is the flywheel will be out of time

  • may i just ask if whats the problem on the crankshaft and camshaft gear if the intake valve opens late from the angle that it is supposed to open, likewise to the exhaust valve if it closes late?for instance, the intake valve is supposed to open at 10 degrees after top dead center but what happenned is, it opens at 20degrees after top dead center.

  • @iexploderacoons how do i set the timing on the cam what are the marks to tell where to set it

  • how to set the timing on my cam

  • @MrBeny179 just compression, its fine

  • Tell which B&S engine you are talking about.
