@arroyomusic I can tell you how: he knows a lot of chords and inversions and knows where he is on the neck at all times. much like singing and playing at the same time, once you have the constituent parts of a tune down where you can run them in any position on autopilot, then you can combine them and even improvise on them while keeping the continuity of the voices.
