When will people here learn to acknowledge the distinction between the composer's "possible" intention and the singer's interpretation. I find it impossible to believe that any composer of operas expected singers to comply fully and obediently with his/her wishes. They LOVED music, for fuck's sake - so lay off pedants an listen and learn...
-
that means that in respect of different tastes you and people with your tastes should listen only to callas and other singers with dark voices. i and other people with my tastes (who dont like dark voices) will go on listening to gruberova's version of casta diva. in my opinion gruberova is not less dramatic than callas when she sings casta diva only because her voice is much more beautiful.

As already told I heard casta diva sung by callas, ponselle, gencer, caballe, sutherland,sills, fleming, frittoli,... and others. but the only casta diva i really like (much much much more than the other versions) is the one sung by edita gruberova. even if bellini made this role for a contralto as you said, i don't like very much callas when she sings casta diva and all the singers with dark voices and on the contrary i like gruberova's voice.

@SiegmundOpera Norma is supposed to be sung by a heavy and dark voice. Bellini composed it for Giuditta Pasta, who was a sfogato, which means she was a contralto that could hold high notes like a soprano, but still with the dark, dramatic tone of a contralto. Like Callas, who was the personification of Norma. Gruberova lacks dramatic energy, she is totally out of place here.

i agree with you. i am not a musical expert and therefore as a profane i listen to all casta diva videos (callas, sutherland, caballe, sills, fleming, ecc.) and can say that the interpretation of casta diva that most pleases my soul and my ears is that of gruberova followed by that of sarah poncell. with the gruberova i thought there is finally a casta diva sung with subtle delicate voice with a very beautiful timbre and not with dark and too heavy voices that i dislike completely.
Casta Diva!!Thank you Edita for everything you give us and the whole world. It was my fortune to have the same teacher in Vienna..and having you as a good friend ..God bless Chamber Singer Ruthilde Boesch. The Best! We love you..

@DiegoMartinazzoli LA CONOSCE?
Vincenzo2010an 8 months ago
@Vincenzo2010an Non la conosco troppo a dire il vero... Ci ho fatto qualche parola quando mi è capitata l'occasione di vederla all'uscita dopo le varie opere e i vari concerti a cui ho assistito!

Without wanting to create much controversy, what is then the name of the chain of sounds emitted by Miss Gruberova, at 1:52 to 1:54, "che inargentti".... in my book, that is called to : attack a tone from underneath, scooping it up, going through a game of tones NOT WRITTEN in the score which I have in front of my eyes right now...and there are many, many of THOSE NOT CALLED PORTAMENTI in the way Miss Gruberova sings this aria..... Terribly sorry, I am just reading the score.
