I learnt about the difference between these names in Catalan and Castillano during Spanish class at school; still it's downright confusing for me. I tend to prefer Castillano, if you don't mind -- most of my Spanish relatives don't speak anything but that... Learning Catalan would bring my total of languages to 7, however...

I thought this holiday was actually called San Juan or Saint John... Am I Wrong?

No, you are right. San Juan in Spanish, Saint John in English... and I misspelled because I mixed two languages, but in catalan (which is the language here in Barcelona) is Sant Joan. Almost comming now!
