Street corner group The Gay Tunes, from Brooklyn, only made one single for Timely, recorded and released in 1954, though other records followed in later years for Joyce ('I Love You') and Dome ('Don't Go') . Their lead singer was Earl Kirton.

  • I knew one of these guys. What an odd time warp - to hear his voice after not hearing it for so many years, and yet, knowing that this was recorded before I was born. Pinch, I still remember the way you wore your hat.

  • Wow, that's an odd one! Can you tell us any more about him or the group? Thanks for this.

  • Man, you got some really great tunes!

  • thanks!

  • did they record for Pet records too?

  • Not that I know of. I'd guess you might be thinking of The Gay Knights ('Angel'/'The Loudness Of My Heart) which come out on Pet - another great record.

  • I forgot to mention that Leroy Williams may not have been on the Timely record. He was a later member. Thanks, Dennis - ultimatevocalgroup dot/com

  • The members listed below were the Gay Tunes on Timely from 1953. Eddie Kirton and Fred Davis along with 3 others reformed the group as the Gaytunes and recorded for the Joyce label in 1957 & Dome records as the Gay Tunes in 1958. In response to the "Gay" reference below, I don't remember the word being used in the 1950's in that connotation. Thanks, Dennis - ultimatevocalgroup dot/com

  • @Ezdduf4kuZ excuse me but this was not a "POP BAND" rather a rhythm and blues group.and great at that. tom d brick,nj doowopman49

  • the thrill of this early rhythm and blues!!! although new to this listener, an instant favorite. thank you sooooo very much for the treat. tom d brick,nj

  • I'd like to know why a pop band would choose a name like gay tunes, it just seems unappropriate, even cartoons sounds better as a name for a band. Mind you back in those days these simple names made a hit records. The 4 lads, 4 dots, brothers 4 & the crewcuts are a few examples of simplier times. Nowadays it's Nsync, Backstreetboys, Blink 182 & Eminem.

  • All of these guys except Carey went on to be the Verdicts (Aljon Records).
