Source for Myths and Facts: Myths and Facts about Eating Disorders by Gina L. Prigoff, Ph.D.
Myth: Only females have eating disorders.
FACT: Although the majority of people with an eating disorder are female, the numbers of males are increasing significantly.
Myth: Only "good little rich girls" become anorexic.
FACT: Although anorexia appears more pronounced in times of plenty, culture is currently preoccupied w/ thinness and many young women, regardless of their background and status, have bought into this obsession.
Myth: Bulimia is a good way to lose weight.
FACT: Bulimia is a poor weight reduction method. First, it doesn't work (as was concluded in a London study of 500 women with bulimia which reported a 7-10 pound weight gain per person). Secondly, it is very dangerous and creates an altered biochemical state predisposing one to numerous physical and psychological problems.
Myth: "Once I diet and lose some weight, I won't gain it back."
The overwhelming majority of dieters will re-gain their lost weight within a year. Only a healthy, balanced diet and exercise will allow you to maintain your weight. Everyone has a pre-determined "set-weight." Research shows that our bodies will always strive to stay within 5 to 10 pounds of this set weight no matter how much we try to diet or otherwise.

Kirsten Cannon, Intern
University of Memphis
Kirsten is a senior at the University of Memphis who will graduate in May 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in English. Her post-grad plans are to attend graduate school in either Clinical Psychology or Counseling to become a therapist specializing in the treatment of eating disorders.
As the oldest of three daughters and swim coach to many youngsters, Kirsten understands the importance of self-worth and body acceptance at every age. She seeks to "save the world" by changing the conversations society has in regards to body image and the importance of outward appearance. Kirsten is so excited and honored to be working with BWV INSIDEout, Inc. and believes wholeheartedly in its mission to empower others to embrace "real" beauty and can't wait to learn more about how to accomplish that.
In her spare time, she enjoys playing with her yellow lab puppy, Miley; singing; drinking coffee; reading; shopping; and spending time with her two fabulous sisters.

She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science from George Mason University in Fairfax Virginia. Becca also acquired the Certified Personal Training Certification from the National Strength & Conditioning Association, one of the best national accrediting organizations in the fitness field.
For 13 years, Becca Marino battled an eating disorder until finally, she checked herself into a facility, where she spent six months. While there, she realized just how powerful inspiration could beāpeople believed in her, believed that she could do it, even when she didn't believe in herself. Those six months would motivate her to change her life, and believe in herself. Once she left, she knew she had to use this gift that she had been given to help other people. "I truly believe inspiration is the catalyst for change and that I have a responsibility to take what I've learned and pay it forward," says Marino. And, that's exactly what she's been doing. ~Written by Beth Davis, Natural Awakenings Magazine
