This is a 1939 song made famous by British singer Vera Lynn with music written by Ross Parker and words by Hughie Charles. The version here is by Peggy Lee with Benny Goodman.

Clip features British defences in Malaya, and the secret weapon of the Japanese - the bicycle. In 2 months, Japanese troops cycled and conquered the length of Malaya, ending with the British surrender at Bukit Timah in Singapore. Clip includes the British surrender party with a white flag carried by Major Wild at the surrender.(Major Wild became a War Crime investigator after the war. He was killed in an air crash whilst conducting investigations against Japanese War Criminals. Special thanks to his niece Rose Wild for the info.)

Also shown are civilian air raid precaution officers of all races fighting fires ignited by Japanese bombing. A very pretty girl in pink is featured walking pass the street full of soldiers and civil defence volunteers. I wonder what really happened to her? Did she survive the war? Can anyone help identify her?......she's cute!

My paternal granny told me of the time when she was a little girl, probably a toddler, when she was picked up by a Japanese soldier who started laughing with his compatriots. Thankfully nothing happened to her - may God have mercy on the guy who let her off.

And my maternal granny had to cut her hair short (to pass off as a guy) to escape and hid in a manhole for weeks on end. Such was the fear of the civilians during the time.

the Japanese are barbaric bastards. thumbs up if u concur. cheers

Thanks for posting this. I wish the video quality were just a little better. As it is, any one of those British soldiers could have been my dad. He survived four years of the Changi concentration camp, but only just.

The British may have occupied Malaya, but they are humane and civil. They never chopped off peoples heads off on a whim and they never took away Malay women to be made as sex slaves.

The Japanese did all that, they did all of these and even more.

They tortured my Gramps for a month for failing to bow, its still a miracle that he survived.

Today, the Japanese and their culture are admired here in Malaysia. The new generation are blind to what these barbarians did to their forefathers......

An easy win to Japan, they managed invades Malaya in just 7 weeks. My late grandfather Ahmad an ex-policemen says, they are gutless, clueless nothing much to do with limited weapon and back up. British looks overly focus in Europe losing grip in east Asia until a turning point when U.S military involve in Pacific war. Anyway that was history, thanks to commonwealth army who help Malaya during the war.
