Eighteen-year old pianist Dong June Kim was the winner of the piano division of the 2008 California Youth Symphony Young Artist Competition. He was born in Seoul, Korea and currently resides in Fremont, California, where he attends American High School. He began his piano studies at the age of five, and fell in love with the instrument immediately. June became serious about his piano studies when he was accepted into the Korean National University Art Prep School in the year 2000. In 2005, he also studied for a semester at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, before moving to California. Prior to winning the 2008 California Youth Symphony Young Artist Competition, he won the 1998 Korean Philharmonic Orchestra Young Artist Competition (Grand Prize), the 1999 Music Education News Young Artist Competition (Grand Prize), the 2000 Sejong University Piano Competition, the 2002 Music Association Piano Competition (1st Place), the 2002 Junior Chopin Piano Competition, the 2003 Spring-Autumn Piano Competition, the 2004 Ehwa Gyung Hyang Piano Competition, the 2004 Ewon Piano Competition (1st Place), the 2004 Juilliard Scholarship Award, the 2005 Suri International Piano Competition (Grand Prize), the 2007 KAMSA Concerto Soloist Competition (1st Place), the 2007 Korea Times Music Competition (Grand Prize), the 2008 Silicon Valley Orchestra Concerto Soloist Competition and Oberlin International piano competition (6th prize). Dong June Kim is a student of award-winning concert pianist and teacher, Michelle Lee of San Jose. This young pianist's hobbies include basketball, computer games, and going to the opera. He aspires to a career as a concert pianist.
