This is footage of two timber rattlesnakes engaged in a combat dance. Rarely is this behavior ever observed in the wild, and only occasionally in captivity. Males behave in this fashion as they compete for the right to mate with females and over territory. This is all part of the courtship ritual as the receptive female these snakes are fighting over will likely mate with the victor. A huge thanks to Tommy Hartzog for inviting me to see such a spectacular and rare event. Incidentally, because they were found near human habitation, the snakes were gently relocated to a more remote location on the mountain so that they could continue their activity. Another huge thanks to Steve O'Neil for his taking the time out of his busy schedule to do some editing for me.

  • how far did you relocated them? studies show that they cannot handle relocation very well...i know it's a tough choice when they are found near humans as humans hate them.

  • Thanks for the interest. Actually I relocated them not too far from where they were found so they would be within their home ranges. It is possible that they could go back to the same place but hopefully they will not return, and I am quite certain the property owner will not kill them. He just doesn't want them that close to his house (he has young kids and grandkids).
