If oyu save a monk, 4 scolars will appear and will help you because you rescued their friend.
If it is a normal citizen a group of men will appear sixe: 3 - 6 (depends of the amount of gaurds who were bothering the citizen, the strength of the gaurds and the district of the town). The men will, if you're being followed, grab the guards so they will lose sight of you.

no, you start with 4 of 5. After every assassination you gain one.
And when you do a view point or you save a citizen, you'll see a bar beneath you health bar (synch bar) with 15 stripes. when that second bar is full, you'll get more health. And the 2nd bar starts again counting to 15

I love how people's limbs get bent out of shape after being assassinated.

When you save a civilian, a group of four people appear around the area you saved them.
They help you fight off guards. Pretty useful when you're escaping.
