ONE OF THE BIGGEST SPORTS BLOOPERS OF ALL TIME!!!

James Stephen Smith, better known as Steve Smith (born April 30, 1963) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 198485 to 200001. Although he was regarded as a top defenceman during his 15-year NHL career, he is often remembered for scoring a critical own goal in the playoffs of his rookie year.
Smith was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft in the 6th round, 111th overall. He began his NHL career in 1985 and had a successful season, playing in 55 regular season games and six playoff games. On April 30, 1986 (his 23rd birthday), Smith and the Oilers were playing in Game 7 of the Smythe Division Final against the arch-rival Calgary Flames. In the third period, with the score tied at two, he made a pass from behind his own net that inadvertently ricocheted off goaltender Grant Fuhr and into the Edmonton net. The Oilers never recovered and ultimately lost the series, while Calgary went on to the Stanley Cup Finals.[3]

Smith played in Edmonton until the end of the 199091 season. After leaving Edmonton, he played for the Chicago Blackhawks until 1997. After announcing his retirement due to injury following the 199697 NHL season, he made a comeback and played three seasons with the Calgary Flames, retiring for good in December 2000.

  • It was a rookie mistake. What gets me is after the Oilers were eliminated, people were saying Oilers well (most players) were into cocaine. Get real...a year later they won another cup and no one mention about cocaine.

  • @jkappianaq Well Grant Fuhr admitted to snorting Cocaine and was suspended for most of a year, but as for the others i dunno.

  • Shout-out to my nigga 240p!

  • I work where he golfs. He's a really nice guy, hell of a temper though if he gets mad.

  • I worked with his dad at the beer store...God Rest His Soul...Steve was tormented with death threats and absolute bullshit phone calls at all hours of the night.

I actually played youth all-star hockey with him. He was a a great guy.

He was actually cut from the Junior "C" team in his hometown and got picked up by the London Knights in the OHA.

I know this goof-up won't die but understand at least that he did suffer. Remember him as an All-Star player and human.

  • how bout the guys who got traded in the off season from edmonton..OUCH!

  • I'm a Flames fan myself, but people still won't let sleeping dogs lie & leave poor Steve Smith alone about this miscue. He went on to win 3 Stanley Cups the following 4 seasons with Edmonton and at least he lived to tell, unlike Bill Buckner who had to leave Boston because of continuous harrassment from Red Sox fans and he never did get another shot at winning the World Series.

  • @Tubewings yup but you didnt :)

  • @sweiland75 turn you're volume up.
