Yeh mera prem patra - 1964 film Sangam. Singer: Mohammed Rafi. Lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri. Music by Shankar-Jaikishan. Stars: Rajendra Kumar, Vyjayanthimala Bali, Raj Kapoor, Iftekhar. Written by Inder Raj Anand. Producer-Director: Raj Kapoor. Other film with same or similar names were made in 1941, 1954, and 2004. Mohammed Rafi and the lyricists should have won hundreds of top Bollywood awards in that "old is gold" era of the Bollywood film industry. When Mohammed Rafi songs, like this one, fail to win top Bollywood awards, it proves something is wrong, but what? The legendary singer Mohammed Rafi (1924-1980) still continues to entertain millions around the world. Surely, he justly and rightly deserves more honours for his selfless contributions to the Bollywood film and entertainment industry. Under-rated, under-paid Mohammed Rafi was honoured with the "best singer of the millennium" by Hero Honda and Stardust magazine in Mumbai on 07 January 2001, over twenty years after Rafi passed away in July 1980. "It was Mohammed Rafi sahib's humility which made him such a great singer. This is evident in his songs which he sang from the heart. He thought of the music, and doing a good job. He did not think of the money or furthering his career. His personality and attitude showed in his voice which was like divine nectar. God created him to sing...," according to a tribute by Shakil on YouTube. Urdu/Hindi Lyrics:

Meherbaan Likhoon, Haseena Likhoon, Ya Dilruba Likhoon,
Hairaan Hoon Ke Aap Ko Is Khat Mein Kya Likhoon,
Yeh Mera Prem Patr Par Kar,
Ke Tum Naaraaz Na Hona,
Ke Tum Meri Zindagi Ho,
Ke Tum Meri Bandagi Ho,

Tujhe Main Chand Kehta Tha, Magar Usme Bhi Daagh Hai,
Tujhe Suraj Main Kehta Tha, Magar Usme Bhi Aag Hai,
Tujhe Itna Hi Kehta Hoon,
Ki Mujhko Tumse Pyar Hai,
Tumse Pyar Hai x3,
Yeh Mera Prem Patra Par Kar,
Ke Tum Naaraaz Na Hona,
Ke Tum Meri Zindagi Ho,
Ke Tum Meri Bandagi Ho,

Tujhe Ganga Main Samjhoon Ga,
Tujhe Jamuna Main Samjhoon Ga,
Tu Dil Ke Paas Hai Itni,
Tujhe Apna Main Samjhoon Ga,
Agar Mar Jaoon Rooh Bhatke Ge,
Tere Intezaar Mein,
Intezaar Mein x3,
Yeh Mera Prem Patra Par Kar,
Ke Tum Naaraaz Na Hona,
Ke Tum Meri Zindagi Ho,
Ke Tum Meri Bandagi Ho...

  • First and foremost, memorable and eternal songs (like this one) are conceived and created by incomparable and irreplaceable lyricists, such as Hasrat Jaipuri and Majrooh Sultanpuri, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, etc. Music is packaging. However, good lyrics can be ruined by singers who can make or break a super hit like this one.

  • Rafi sahib passed away 30 years ago (30 July 1980), but his legend lives on as his voice still continues to entertain and amaze millions around the world. No one replace humble, modest and pious Rafi sahib who changed Indian film playback and music industry forever. He is a book on how to sing. His playback voice changed the fate of many Indian film actors and made them superstars of their time. I feel honoured to have met him, be his family's neighbour in London-UK. RIP Mohammed Rafi.

  • amazing voice old is always gold.

  • Memorable song but bears a striking resemblance, both in tune and some of the lyrics, to M.S. Viswanathan's Tamil song, Paavadai Thavani, penned a good three years earlier!

  • Like

  • do you guys know that hasrat jaipuri saab actually wrote this when he fell in love with his wife and gave it to her, before he became a bollywood lyricist. lol for a moment forget the song and read the lyrics, thats just next level writing a letter like that for a girl, i'd never be able to do it lol...

  • Absolutely PERFECT. I have got nothing to add. All has alrady been said. But please come back those days

  • i was just few month old when this film was released in 1964...never had a chance to watch it anyway, but my dad saw it for 7 times...it was THE film those days, as it was said. But today, im 47 now, i watched it with many times more than my dad did those days...and i truly understand why many people watch this movie again and again without bored...SANGAM is truly an excellent movie, great music. All you guys/gals up there, you are all right abt this. It's hard to find good meaningful movie now

  • I am from Sri Lanka.I watched this film in 1968 when I was only 11. Now I am 53 and I still love this movies and all their songs.

  • excelllent song..it touches heart and makes spirit and soul alive

  • @spsyed truly genuine comments; the legendary Rafi sahab has no match, his voice is simply eternal, full of magical melody, romance, youth and finesse that pervades the limited span of human imagination; we are honoured that we happen to live in this period of time to be able to listen to the god-gifted voice of the great Rafi sahab who did change the fate of many Indian actors as they sang his songs on the screen. Rest in Eternal Peace, Rafi Sahab.

  • and yes I never forget those writers!!!!
