@rockdahaus But if even if you could play those songs flawlessly; that doesn't erase the fact that the vast majority of jazz drummers are incapable of doing so themselves. Dave Weckl could never handle the intro to a Nightmare to Remember - the double bass is just too fast. So, in the end it really is just a case of apples and oranges.

@rockdahaus I don't believe that anyone who isn't a good drummer can actually play those songs. Sure, you can keep the beat of those songs - but can you play all of the nuances; the complex fills and double bass parts? If so, then you are gifted in the area of double bass. I have been playing for many years - I can play jazz tunes and Tool songs but I cannot touch the double bass of Nightmare To Remember. I doubt you really can. Also, try Dance of Eternity - it's impossibly hard.

@metalmike83 Sorry, don´t be offended, but i can play Honor Thy Father and Nightmare To Remember (not flawless). But i have realy ploblems to sound good at Jazz and some Songs of some Gavin Harrison or Rosetta Stoned of Tool. I´m not a good drummer, but i can play most Dream Theater songs. What´s that saying? I´m not able to create that stuff. Mike is realy a great drummer, but don´t make him godlike. There is always a younger (sometimes older) one who is better.

If you think you can play it too... press 0:12 and hear the reaction!

Harrison drums like a white person.

i love how people think doing simple parididdles at fast speed is skill. as gavin calls them, just gimicks that "we" all know how to do. dbl snare dbl tom dbl tom dbl snare. all that stuff is basic just speed up. gavin has a control that is absolutely astounding. My favorite drummer is Danny Carey but gavin in my mind is a better drummer, i just like danny's unique and impressive creativity and polyrythms. his music is true yoga. Thomas Haake is another one. his feet blow portnoy away

@AMERICASMANRONPAUL I knew you would make fun of me for forgetting that you're not the uploader of this video by checking if you blocked me so I just wanted to nip that in the bud right now and come clean with that slight miscalculation.

@AMERICASMANRONPAUL Stop listening to those faggoty, uppidy know-nothing profs who could never play a hard Dream Theater tune or a Mike Protnoy solo if their life depended on it. They are stuck up, arrogant semi-retarded, illogical prunes who are jealous of guys like Mike who play them away on pretty much any level aside from being able to play the fucking jazz ride pattern. Think for yourself. Just because the information comes from a "university" doesn't make it good.
-
@AMERICASMANRONPAUL But until I see guys like Gary Novak and Peter Earskin pulling off the double bass parts in Honor Thy Father. In fact, until I see ANYONE you mentioned aside from Virgil, Priester, and Lang actually able to play that, I will never consider them better. Why? Because it takes years of dedication to be able to pull it off. Much like it takes years of dedication to play jazz. Metal is just as much music as jazz is. Get over it and grow the fuck up.

@AMERICASMANRONPAUL Mike Portnoy's feel blows Mangini's out of the water. Just go read the comments on any Mangini video. Everyone fucking says that Portnoy's better. Why? Because he's way smoother and has a better feel for what he's doing. Mangini sounds boring as fuck - despite all his ostinatos and polyrythms. Again, if you want a drummer who is truly superior, Gavin would be your man. I only say that because he literally has everything Portnoy does and then some.
I'm a guitarist, and STILL am influenced by gavin harrison. He offers so much in his rhythmic diversity that it would be wise for ANY musician to study his work, ESPECIALLY for composers

Double bass fills in a Miles tune would only be a sin if anyone else was playing them.
