@mahabrahmana : They're just good friends of Krishna, the gopis are in love with him. And Krishna used to spend more time with the boys initially, but later, after the clothes stealing incident, he started spending much more time with the gopis.
It may be because Im a girl, but Id much rather be a girl whom Kanha teases by stealing her clothes, than be his friend who 'challenges' him.

In that, they are much closer to him than his male friends could possibly be. The cowherd boys are, after all, his friends, they have not completely surrendered to him
