Joan Baez & Joni Mitchell ~ DIDA ~ by Joan Baez. "Dida" is a pre-runner of "Children". It was originally recorded with Joni Mitchell in June 1974 while Joan was in the studio doing a record of political nature. It held up as a valid track in Joan`s mind for seven months, so when she got back to L.A. she went into the studio with Henry Lewy, the original engineer, to finish it up. Tom Scott and some of L.A.`s top horn players came in on it, and the album was complete."

  • Lovely feel good song, funny that two of the greatest songwriters of the era settled on such a lyric, or lack of one.

  • :-)

  • On this song i always was dancing in my livingroom...round and round and also singing!

    xx:)

  • That is so cute! Dance and sing as if no one were watching you! Take care!

  • Why must we always pit our artists--especially our women artists--against each other? Why can't we be happy for the expression each has offered, realizing that the world at large benefits from multiplicity and diversity?

  • Later on, Debbie played back-up guitar and piano, and did some singing on several of Andersen's subsequent albums, but she was so dialed down in the final mix as to be almost inaudible. So it seems that Andersen kept holding her down, and we all lost something great as a result. I do love his songs, singing, and so on, but loathe his censoring of Debbie!

  • Debbie's albums were pictured in a big collage in the book 'Baby Let Me Follow You Down: the Illustrated Story of the Cambridge Folk Years' by fellow musician and close friend of all these folks Eric Von Schmidt. Part of Debbie's story is chronicled there also.

  • The reason we haven't heard Debbie Green sing is that when she fell in love with and eventually married Eric Andersen, he was intimidated by her talent and made her stop performing. She had a couple of albums out before that, which I haven't been able to find.

  • this song remind sme of the old LP Joan Baez "diamonds and rust" i found in a garage market in gloomy summer...saved by this unique album and this song

  • @MyAlberto59 But I don't hear any current singers showing any kind of Baez-influence, i.e no one seems interested in emulating Baez in the least, nowadays. But I hear Joni-influence in many singers, including in the best selling Jazz singer today, Diana Krall, who definitely has some Joni-influence in her fine voice.

  • @Bobjb999 Joni Mitchell is an artist at 360 degrees but the voice of Joan is not comparable. Her voice comes straight from heaven.Bob Dylan said that and he was so right.

  • I see Joni Mitchell made Rolling Stone mag's "100 Best Singers" list, & its "100 best Guitarists" list, both. Joni's the only female who made it onto the best guitarists list. Baez made it onto neither list. The lists were mainly the result of votes from large panels of musicians & singers, suggesting Joni's far more respected, not just by critics & record buyers, but by fellow musicians too, than is Baez.

    PS

don't get to close to JM at concert, you might get hit by flying bottles or rotten tomatoes.

Meanwhile the older BAEZ was getting standing Os at the same events.

I know that's gotta hurt,. Roberta, but ya shouda quit smoking and writing all those boring self obcessed dirges.

  • @Bobjb999

Have YOU heard Debbie Green sing?

I didn't think so. Never a major or evolved artist. Joni copied a more obvious ICON.

Baez' style has evolved 10 times since the short period she knew Green. Baez admitted to copying arrangements and repetoire (no Green originals, just well know folk songs) of Green hen they were 17. Big deal.

JM is a jealous nasty crank who produced 3 or four wonderful lps, screwed a lot of rock stars, and forever whines about her legacy.

  • Are you trying to imply the Green story's an "egotistical" Mitchell fantasy, despite the fact it's documented by detailed research in the book Positively 4th Street, with quotes from both Green&Baez, who admits to stealing her friend's act?Whether Joni has 'huge ego" has no bearing on the the truth of tale,or on value of Joni's music. It's irrelevant whether Joni's early singing was Baez/Green influenced.Baez is tiny artist compared to Joni's accomplishments. She has good reason to have a big ego!
