Italian engineer thanks Taiwanese surgeons for saving his life

Taipei, March 18 (CNA) An Italian engineer expressed his gratitude at a press conference Wednesday to the Taiwanese surgeons who brought him back from the brink of death following a workplace accident last year.
Alberto Zaffaroni, 47, an independent engineer who does contract work installing sophisticated medical equipment in hospitals, also lauded the outstanding skills of the surgeons at Taipei Medical University Hospital (TMUH) who treated him for a serious skull fracture.

Hospital President Wu Chih-hsiung said at the press conference that Zaffaroni was hit on the head by a 350-kg falling pillar while he was installing a machine at a hospital in Guanyin township in northern Taiwan's Taoyuan County in June 2007.

The accident broke Zaffaroni's skull and he was rushed to TMUH for emergency treatment, where he underwent two separate rounds of brain surgery. He returned home to Milan Aug. 15 that same year, where he had six months of rehabilitation treatment and where his doctors said there are only two or three surgeons in Italy capable of performing the surgery he received.

Chiang Yung-hsiao, director of the TMUH neurosurgery department, said he told Zaffaroni he was very lucky, as 85 percent of injuries such as his are fatal.

Zaffaroni has returned to work since his recovery, traveling the world to install sophisticated machinery, although he said he now treats Taiwan as his second home because the people here have taken such good care of him.
