What greater thing is there for two human souls than to feel that they are joined... to strengthen each other... to be at one with each other in silent unspeakable memories.

"City folk" like to assume that their culture is "better" than rural culture. ;)
Before the time of radio, TV broadcasts & the Internet; rural cultures
were isolated from outside cultural influence. That's what saved their
music & folklore!
My other grandparents had a farm in the northeastern USA. They lived
in an area that was in transition because of available jobs in industry
& the public sector. K-12 school's gym was used for dances; that the
entire community attended (1950's/1960's)

Right ye are!
People in the country learned to dance at home with their siblings & cousins (who always lived nearby). If a musician wasn't present, the adults would "Lilt" ("Mouth-Music") to provide the rhythm for the instructions.
At the public gatherings for the community; girls who were not engaged would often dance together (the fellows would do their own singular jigs -- or go outside & drink).
Only engaged & married couples were allowed to dance the
reels & sets together in public

"samdogdamndog2" is right.
At that time; according to the rules of church; only engaged & married couples were allowed to dance the reels and "sets"
("Sets" = "Squares" = Celtic version of the American Square dance)
The waltz was seen as positively scandalous! The waltz was forbidden
by most of the churches of Europe (when it first arrived on the dance
scene). But later it was allowed (for awhile) ONLY for married couples
