COMOX VALLEY - Members of the Chinese Biathlon team began their pre-Olympic training on Mount Washington today in preparation for the 2010 games in Vancouver. The 21 members are the first of 26 teams expected to train at the Vancouver Island ski facility in the coming weeks.
The resort began courting teams to train on the mountain several years ago using the reasoning snow conditions would be similar to that of Cypress and Whistler during the games. In actual fact Mount Washington is experiencing much healthier ski conditions than the official Olympic venues. The resort is currently enjoying a base of 320cms which is the deepest snow base in Canada.
Don Sharpe, Mount Washington's Director of Business Services said the facility is used to hosting international athletes and events but acknowledged that having Olympic teams bring a different challenge to staff with different needs including food and technical considerations.
Volunteers from the Comox Valley are assisting the teams during their stays, acting as volunteer attaches to ensure smoother visits.
