A look at how Mongolia's new capitalism has prompted a nomadic revival.

On the grasslands, it's time to brand the wild ponies. Nomadic farmer, Jamts, is marking out his property. In post-communist Mongolia, nomads are once again permitted to own their own livestock. Inside their traditional ger tent, Jamts' wife, Dorj, prepares the day's fresh milk and cream. With skilful management of their resources, Jamts and Dorj have brought up 13 children. But as Mongolia heads for full blown capitalism, nomads now battle with powerful market forces. Jamts has thrived where many have failed because his enterprising nephew, Mendsaikhan, helps him sell produce in the city. Mendsaikhan takes Jamts' adult daughter, Pagma, back home for a visit. Far away from city nightclubs and medical student life, Pagma falls back into the nomadic routine. Haggling at the market, Mendsaikhan gets a good price for his uncle's sheepskins. Traders like he and Jamts can provide Mongolia's stumbling economy with much needed income. But government advisers believe that the nomadic lifestyle will inevitably collide with economic reform.

  • Happiness is considered very important in life. Happy life is better than everything.

I am fMongolian. When I was a schoolboy I used to go country side on my summer vacation and enjoyed nomadic life. Ride a horse, drink so much milk, original yogurts, eat a food with jerky and see horse racing.Missing old good times. Their home made vodka and horse milk alcohol is good to drink.

Now I am planning to go Western for education.Travel around old europian countries and live.I am enjoying in my life.

  • @Rhythmiclol I am interested in visiting Mongolia and if I like it a lot, I might consider living there for some time. Can you tell me, is being a nomad hard? Can tell me about your country as I don't know too much except that it is very beautiful.

  • I wanna go to Mongolia dammit!

  • also...the brain tends to create sentimentality with environments, people or items it is intimitely familar with...hence the grim practice of TRADITION (i say grim because its led to outright political and social perversions in our long history of civilization) where even if a yougn brain has no sentimentality for ranching...the parent would instill it (or even obligate it) into the childs brain....the nomadic life was humanities first way of life---but evolution exists for a reason...progress

  • even the old rancher in this video didnt necessarily want to be a rancher...the brain is designed to adapt and train itself for certain environments....which creates a sort of mental comfort in a forced or constant environment that may not neccessarily be desirable...for all we know he would have been a stunt driver if he could have been...but after years of forced nomadic life (by neccessity) he would inevitably gain a distinct comfort as a rancher...because thats what the brain does to survive

  • @denduudenduu

and do you think much has changed since then? lol come on.
