That's debatable. There were never good kings in England. Mostly power mad people with over bearing ambition. Early Plantagenets and Norman kings weren't good towards the Anglo Saxon England. They were French and never considered themselves part of the Anglo Saxon serfs.

The common individual was largely silenced during the medieval ages.

still doesn't make him a good King - warrior, yes but not a good king.

Its not the Robin Hood stories. Its his adventures and as a represetative of the state, he was the first "English" King to make a mark on the world stage.

Previously only Europe knows about Henry II or William the conqueror for their power in Western Europe. But it was Richard I of whom gained legend amongst all Europeans and all of the Middle East (Turks and Egyptians). The startling victories at Acre, Arsuf and Jaffa are all simply legendary. Even the Moslems highly respected him.

actually I wouldn't say Richard the Lionheart was all that great of king despite the accolades the later Robin Hood myths give him. He barely spent anytime in England during his reign which is why the barons loved him - he was an absentee king. John on the other hand was a strong administrator who didn't let the barons do as they pleased thus why they hated him and he came down to us as a chief villain in the Robin Hood stories

Just found A history of Britain- Conquest 1/6, on you tube,if you are still interested. Have not got round to watching the others yet but I enjoyed it. People losing control is not that unusual in any war. Just finished "All Hell Let Loose" by Max Hastings(WWII). Some soldiers realising their trousers were wet feared that they were wounded then realised that they had wet themselves! (No glory in war)

    Thanks.

Our poor ancestors, forced to fight. ANd brought us like animals, without cleanliness and hygeine!

I was looking at one tv drama, and one thing that stuck in my mind is that, the soldiers in lines before battle, went to the bathroom right where they were standing! That was so shocking to know, but it was life at the time!

Try 1066 the year of three battles by Frank McGlynn. Pretty sure that is available in paperback. There was a work of fiction entitled "The last English King" cannot remember the author- good fun in an offbeat type of way. This Channel 4 programme was pretty good, despite being made for TV. Also Simon Schama s history of Britain, TV programme and book were excellent. The battle lasted a lot longer than 21 minutes! Estimates vary from 8- 11 hours.
